It is fascinating to see when certain foods you grew up with earns their fame based on their benefits and becomes a super food all of a sudden. For example Chia seeds. I grew up eating chia seeds all the time during summer when it was hot outside. In Afghanistan we use chia seeds to remedy heat exhaustion, it also believed chia seeds has special healing benefits to protects against sun exposure and aid heat related symptoms such as headache, dizziness and nausea.
During summer my grandma always made us drink chia seeds mixed with lemon juice before going out to play in the sun.
Growing up I thought you can only eat chia seeds during summer. Only to find out that there are so many other ways you can enjoy this super food.
Considering the verity of recipes available out there, I thought I would share with you my Afghani way of enjoying chia seeds. This recipe is very simple but yet delicious and refreshing.
For those of you who are using chia seeds on regular basis, I hope you would like this recipe and enjoy it with your families in a hot summer day. Since we believe chia seeds hydrates and helps with minimizing heat stroke it makes it an ideal drink to enjoy when you are out in the sun for longer period of time.
For this simple recipe you will need fresh lemons or limes, cold water, plenty of ice and some sugar or honey to taste. I personally like limes over lemons. I believe limes do not irritate your stomach if you are sensitive towards acidic drinks. However it is only my personal preference! Either lemons or limes both taste equally as fresh and quenching.

Ingredients:
- 2 Lemons or lime
- 1 table spoon chia seeds
- some ice cubes
- sugar or honey to taste
- 4 cups water
(you can adjust the measurement according to your liking!)
Add chia seeds to the water, let is soak for half an hour. Add lemon or lime juice, sugar or honey based to your liking. Add ice cubes and enjoy.
